Who’s the funny bird?

Our logo features the Black Egret, also known as the Umbrella Bird. We adopted him as our mascot and inspiration, because he effortlessly achieves so much of what we aim to do in our work.

Like the best design, he’s not only beautiful, but also functions brilliantly. The name ‘umbrella bird’ comes from his hunting tactic. Walking in shallow water, he dips his head and spreads his wings into a dome shape, just like an umbrella, creating an area of shade. The fish think this shade indicates safe cover, and swim into it. With the sun blocked out by his wings, the Black Egret has a clear view of the fish, and swiftly plucks them from the water.

There’s a playful aspect to the Umbrella Bird, too: it’s hard to watch him without smiling. But like us, he’s determined: he takes his time and does it properly.

Lastly, he collaborates: he’s happy to share his canopy. In fact, Black Egrets tend to gather in huge flocks, rather than working alone. We believe in sharing, too.
